My Path I became an artist before I became a doctor - I drew and painted, and I played a lot of rock and roll guitar. But my rigid approach to guitar-playing (and life) resulted in a repetitive stress injury as a young adult, and I veered away from life as a professional musician. As I struggled with my injury, I became frustrated by the constraints of conventional medicine. It became clear to me that the imbalance in my body was intertwined with an imbalance of mind and spirit. I became interested in and ultimately passionate about, what was then called an alternative, holistic approach to healing: the emerging field of Integrative Medicine. My Professional Career After graduating from medical school, I moved to Boston, where I trained in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. While at MGH, I studied Mind-Body Medicine with Dr. Herbert Benson at the Benson-Henry Institute. I served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. I transitioned to caring for complex medical patients within the Spaulding Rehabilitation. My Education My ultimate decision to become a physician began at Columbia University, where I worked in Dr. Mehmet Oz’s Complementary and Alternative Medicine research group.
